SAFED improving the safety and green credentials of van drivers |
|
|
By Darryl Hankinson
SAFED is a one-day course that involves both practical on-road training and classroom tuition. It concentrates on the following techniques:
Improved road awareness ? spotting junctions in good time, etc
Avoidance of hard braking by maintaining correct braking distances
Improved use of gears and brakes ? avoiding unnecessary gear changes and over-revving
Almost 8000 UK van drivers have now taken the course, and these drivers have reported an increase in their confidence and vehicle control on the roads, as well as reduced levels of stress.
The benefits to businesses are many. As a result of the fuel efficient driving techniques enhanced by the course, the fuel efficiency of vehicles was found to improve by an average of 9 per cent, meaning notable fuel cost savings for companies.
Reduced CO2 emissions not only means that the environment is better protected, but this can also contribute to reduced emission targets set by companies keen to increase their green credentials.
The driving techniques taught, such as softer braking and better gear use, also help to reduce the daily wear and tear |
